Due to the convergent impact of globalisation and the market driven economic policies of the world nations, the past decade created a new set of challenges world wide for education in general, and higher education in particular. Quality of higher education has direct impact on the socio-economic growth of a nation and the quality of life of its people.Higher Education needs to match not only the rapid developments and changes in
technology but also the changing requirements of the society. One of the concerns of the educationists is how to make our students creative thinkers, skill oriented and above all, ethical in their behaviour.

Educational systems must continuously improve not only the curriculum and infrastructure but also the process of implementing the curriculum, particularly the teaching - learning process. This is where the role of teachers assumes paramount significance. Teachers should equip themselves with the necessary skills and proper value system so as to enable them to mould the future of their students appropriate to the changing needs and make them purposeful and productive in the new millennium.

UGC - Academic Staff College of Pondicherry University conducts many Orientation Programmes and Refresher Programmes. These programmes address some of the issues through application of the well - known concept called "Reengineering". Reengineering is the fundamental rethinking and radical designing of the processes to achieve dramatic improvements in the results.
