The UGC– Academic Staff College of Pondicherry University was established in 1987 and it is situated at Pondicherry University campus, Kalapet, Puducherry, India. It is situated 160 kms away from Chennai on the east coast road. It is 13 Kms away from the Pondicherry main bus stand and Pondicherry railway station. It is a inter university institute catering to the needs of all college and University teachers to achieve goals of higher education and keep abreast of the latest developments in their specific subjects. The National Education Policy (1986) recognised the important role of teachers in higher education. During the 7th Plan, UGC conceived the scheme of Academic Staff Orientation and as on the date there are 57 State and Central Universities Academic Staff Colleges (ASC) are available in india. They are conceived with a view to plan, organise, implement, monitor and evaluate Academic Staff Orientation Programmes for newly appointed college and university teachers and refresher programmes for senior teachers.
